Jolly Holiday STEAM Camps 2018-2019

‘Tis the Season for Kids to STEAM! Our Holiday camps 2018-2019 incorporate design thinking, creative thinking, problem solving, engineering and other future-ready skills in  project-based learning experiences for children aged 7+. Each activity encourages participants to explore integrated STEAM concepts and develop themed projects using their imagination and creativity in a fun, hands-on way. These camps are a great introduction to our regular STEAM courses!

Game Studio Bootcamp - Holiday Edition!

Kids create their own video game in this digital gaming camp!

 

This video game-making course emphasizes key elements of STEAM including creative thinking, digital art/design and coding, in a fun and expressive digital project. Kids learn how to code a videogame, build game levels, design their own characters and in-game elements, and learn to code a digital music soundtrack. They will also test and play each other’s games. This is a great introduction to real-world game development!

 

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn and understand Scratch basics for game development

  2. Apply coding and project design to create a game, complete with level design

  3. Utilize creativity to design the avatar and related in-game assets

  4. Demonstrate understanding of product design and coding basics

 

Final Product:  

Create a mini game by applying coding and art asset design

Game

Christmas Animation Workshop!

Kids become directors for their own stop-motion short film!

 

This animation workshop turns children into film makers as they visualize and create their own Christmas stories. Kids will apply multidisciplinary STEAM knowledge and design thinking for the production: from creating their storyboard and visual assets, to shooting and packaging the short animation.

 

Learning Objectives:

  1. Utilize creative thinking to devise a story script

  2. Apply art and design techniques to create the visual assets of their film

  3. Use digital-capture technology to direct and shoot their animation

  4. Use digital editing tools to produce a short film

Final Product:

Collaboratively design and produce a short stop-motion animation (~15 sec)

Story

Secret Agents: Robot Battles!

An immersive robotics camp where kids become secret agents working to save the world!

 

This themed camp emphasizes key elements of STEAM including engineering, design thinking, creative thinking, coding and robotics. Kids become “agents” and are given fun “missions” (challenges) to complete in order to save the world! Using immersive storytelling and role-playing, kids are exposed to a variety of STEAM principles that channel the child’s creativity and problem solving abilities.

 

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand key concepts and applications of a microcontroller - micro:bit

  2. Incorporate engineering, robotics and coding in their projects

  3. Use design thinking, creative thinking and problem solving skills

  4. Apply knowledge gained to progressively complete increasingly complex STEAM challenges

Final Product:  

Design/build a micro:bit controlled robot or invention that increasingly performs complex tasks
